Australia is a vast country, roughly the same size as the Continental United States, filled with an incredible amount of natural wonders and diverse landscapes; from the harsh beauty of the Outback and the magnificent monolith that is Uluru (previously known as Ayers Rock), to the lush wetlands of Kakadu National Park and the Daintree Rainforest in the north, to the wondrous Great Barrier Reef – the largest living thing on Earth, to the dazzling beaches that Australia is understandably proud that cover the huge lengths of coastline. The Sights to see are wondrous and varied.
The cosmopolitan cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth offer an exciting selection of restaurants and bars, galleries, museums and excellent shopping. They are also a great base to explore the neighbouring regions to see some of Australia’s truly unique flora, fauna and animal life like the cute koala, quokka, wombat and kangaroo. Visits to local wineries are a popular option where you can taste world-class wines and sample fresh local produce.
Australia is home today to a population of approximately 24 million people with the majority of the population concentrated along the eastern and south-eastern coasts. The Aborigines are Australia’s indigenous people believed to be one of the oldest living populations in the world boasting a long and interesting culture with strong connections to the land. Australia began its modern history as a British penal colony but the vast majority of people who came to Australia after 1788 were free settlers from Britain and Ireland and also from other European and Asian Countries. Today Australia’s population is a melting pot of many different cultures and this is reflected in the food, art and music.
